Manuela Carmena is set to rise to prominence in a new television series that TVE is developing. Filming of The Lawyers began this week as a six-episode drama inspired by real events. The project is a co-production between MOD Producciones and other partners, following prior works such as Fortune, The Day After Tomorrow, and Cuerpo de Elite.
Created by Patricia Ferreira, the series is directed by Juana Macías and Polo Menárguez. It chronicles the lives of four young women who helped steer the country toward change in the 1970s through their courage, dedication, and perseverance.
The narrative draws on the true experiences of Lola González and features Paula Usero, Cristina Almeida, Elisabet Casanovas, Manu Carmena, Irene Escolar, and Paca Sauquillo in the ensemble cast. The roles portray the personal and political journeys that defined a pivotal era, with Almodóvar–style intensity and a documentary sensibility that underscores the transition from dictatorship to democracy.
Production is taking place across Madrid, Toledo, Guadalajara, Segovia, Leganés, and Hoyo de Manzanares, with filming scheduled to continue through the year toward a December wrap. The project’s writing team includes Patricia Ferreira, Marta Sánchez, Irene Niubó, and Virginia Yagüe, and the executive producers are Nieves Fernández Blanco for RTVE, Fernando Bovaira, and Guillem Vidal-Folch for MOD Producciones.

Set in Madrid in 1969, the story follows Lola González, a recent law school graduate who senses the winds of change as the dictatorship nears its end. When Lola’s partner Enrique is detained by police and dies after a fall from a seventh-floor window during an interrogation, she is forced to confront the brutal realities surrounding her and to reaffirm her commitments to justice and human rights. The incident becomes a catalyst for Lola’s resolve and marks the dawn of a renewed sense of civic responsibility.
As Lola forges ahead, she encounters a cohort of fellow young labor lawyers – Cristina, Manuela, and Paca. Together, they vow to defend democratic ideals and to stand with those who lack resources or voice. The series follows their mobilization, legal battles, and personal sacrifices as they push for social justice in a changing Spain, balancing professional risk with moral purpose and solidarity.
Through vivid character studies and historically grounded storytelling, the narrative explores how a new generation of lawyers contributed to the country’s political awakening. It highlights how legal advocacy and fearless advocacy for civil rights intersected with everyday life, shaping a broader movement toward democracy and reform.
