A man was charged with attempting to kill his romantic partner in Torrevieja. He strangled and stabbed her inside a house, and the case moved through the Alicante Provincial Court. At the hearing on Monday, he entered a guilty plea and accepted a punishment of five years in prison for the crime of murder at a temporary level. The prosecutor, along with the special prosecutor, had initially requested a nine-year term, but after an agreement with the defense and the defendant’s admission of guilt, the request was reduced to five years.
Beyond imprisonment, the defendant faced additional consequences: he must carry out the sentence in Spain, and upon completion or with authorization from the Trial Court, he will be prohibited from entering Spain for ten years. He is also required to pay 180 euros to the victim for injuries sustained in the attack.
I heard voices
According to judicial sources, the defendant claimed during the investigation that he heard voices that urged him to kill his partner.
The events to which the defendant confessed occurred on 10 May 2021 in Torrevieja. During the dispute over a mobile phone, the couple argued, and the man abruptly attacked the woman with the intention of killing her. He punched her in the face, seized her by the neck, and lifted her off the ground while declaring his intent to kill. He then retrieved a kitchen knife and attempted to strike the woman, who defended herself by grabbing the edge of the weapon with her hands and managed to escape. She fled from the home and sought shelter at a neighbor’s residence.
The case highlights the gravity of interpersonal violence and the legal processes that follow such incidents, including the role of plea agreements in shaping sentences and the measures imposed to protect victims and restrict the offender’s ability to re-enter the country.
