Major Moscow Metro Station Repairs to Cause Short-Term Travel Delays
In the near future, about 20 Moscow Metro stations are slated for repair work. The plan, announced by the city’s Ministry of Transport, will create temporary limits on service as crews carry out essential maintenance and improvements. Officials emphasize that these restrictions are temporary and necessary to keep the system safe and reliable for daily riders.
A senior official explained that a large-scale program is underway to refurbish roughly twenty stations in total. He noted that routine maintenance is performed regularly to keep the network in good working order, but the scope and scale of this project require concentrating work during specific windows to minimize the impact on passengers. The plan reflects a balance between upgrading aging infrastructure and maintaining steady subway operations.
The central hubs most affected will be stations on the Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Lyublinsko-Dmitrovskaya, and Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya lines. The repairs focus on several high-traffic areas to improve long-term safety, reliability, and rider experience.
Planned activities include stairway renovations, water intake cleaning, and the restoration of marble and granite exterior finishes that define these historic stations. Such upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernize the metro while preserving the architectural character that commuters value.
Officials stressed that many of these stations have served the city for decades and that while the temporary limitations may inconvenience some travelers, the disruption is expected to be brief. They urged passengers to check current service notices and plan routes accordingly, anticipating smoother service once the improvements are complete.
Additionally, a specific segment of the gray metro line in Moscow will undergo restrictions from May 20 to June 9 to accommodate renovation work on its facilities. Riders are advised to seek alternative routes or time their trips to avoid peak periods during this period. (Source: Moscow Ministry of Transport)
