Magnit Expands Online Footprint with KazanExpress Acquisition and Marketplace Ambitions

Magnit, one of Russia’s largest retailers, is moving to expand its online presence by acquiring the KazanExpress platform. This strategic move will enable Magnit Market to launch a dedicated marketplace, a development reported by TASS. The deal envisions Magnit purchasing KazanExpress in full from AliExpress Russia, its founders Linar Khusnullin and Kevin Hand, and entrepreneur Sergei Eremeev. The consolidation signals a broader push toward integrated e-commerce that blends traditional retail strength with the agility of a digital marketplace.

Industry observers note that online sales across businesses have surged—growth approaching 63 percent over the past six months. Analysts attribute this jump largely to the rapid expansion of marketplaces, which have become central to how consumers shop online. The rising popularity of marketplaces reflects a shift in consumer behavior where buyers expect convenience, wide product selection, and seamless checkout experiences from familiar platforms.

Survey findings suggest that many Russians who regularly use marketplaces feel current stores often lack optional technologies that could enhance the shopping journey. A notable share of respondents—roughly one in five—express interest in orders for alcohol and tobacco through marketplaces, signaling demand for regulated, compliant delivery options and age verification where applicable. The data imply that marketplace operators could explore expanded product categories while maintaining compliance with legal and safety standards.

Respondents also indicate that introducing new technologies could simplify online shopping. There is a shared belief that artificial intelligence can unlock additional capabilities, even as concerns remain about privacy and control. Nevertheless, the majority of buyers appear open to trusting AI to assist with selecting items and processing payments, drawn by the convenience and speed AI can offer in the purchase funnel.

The adoption of automated payments over the Secure Payment Bridge (SBP) is becoming more common in Russia, reflecting a broader trend toward streamlined, contactless transactions that improve checkout times and reduce friction for shoppers.
