Madrid commits €2.4 million to five NGO-led Ukraine relief projects

Madrid will support Ukraine with an investment of 2.4 million euros, distributed across five distinct projects led by five NGOs

Madrid City Council’s Internationalization department has earmarked a total of €2.4 million, allocated to five separate initiatives. Each project is run by a different non-governmental organization, namely UNICEF, International Rescue Committee, Acnur, Farmamundi, and CESAL, with a focus on varied urgent needs facing displaced populations.

These initiatives cover a range of priorities that matter on the ground. They include direct economic assistance to households, essential health and psychosocial support programs, and the setup or improvement of accommodation centers that can provide safe shelter. Additional elements involve equipment such as refrigerators for transporting medicines, which helps ensure vaccines and drugs stay within required temperature ranges, and targeted assistance for disabled individuals who may face heightened barriers to mobility and access in crisis settings.

The announcement came from Santiago Saura, the delegate responsible for Internationalization, during the presentation held at the Cecilio Rodríguez Gardens in El Retiro. He noted that each project carries a budget between €400,000 and €500,000, underscoring the council’s commitment to sustained humanitarian impact. The event also featured NGO representatives, deputy mayor Begoña Villacís, and the Ukrainian ambassador, Serhii Pohoreltsev, who emphasized the importance of coordinated international support.
