A lesbian hate crime was reported in Valladolid last Sunday during the Virgen de San Lorenzo fairs, when a young woman was punched by a man in a group of three, shouting, “lesbian scum.”
According to the organization, the incident occurred near Fabio Nelli Square, where the man struck the woman without any attempt at mediation after asking for her name. The victim sustained a double jaw fracture and required immediate hospitalization and surgical intervention. The assailant fled the scene, and bystanders who were nearby helped the woman, called emergency services, and alerted the police while trying, unsuccessfully, to pursue the attacker. The incident was reported to the National Police by the victim’s father due to the urgent hospital treatment needed for the injured person.
Investigations
Foundation Triángulo emphasized the importance of examining this hate crime. The group stated that shouting “lesbian scum” clearly signals that the assault occurred because of hostility toward LGBTI people, in this case toward a woman whom the attackers viewed as lesbian. They have urged state security forces to conduct a thorough investigation that does not overlook the motive when determining the criminal charge.
Additionally, the foundation expressed concern about an increase in hate crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity, driven by ideological factors or other motives in recent months and years. They urged a firm rejection of hate speech and intolerant, anti-democratic attitudes, and called for a renewed commitment to defending human rights for everyone.
Citizen Collaboration
Foundation Triángulo has asked the public to assist victims if they witness any assault and to help identify and detain those responsible. The organization notes that such hate crimes are being normalized and amplified by far-right positions that reject diversity and deny equal rights to part of the citizenry.
