Landslides Hit Camaná, Arequipa: Emergency Response Under Way

In the southern Peruvian province of Camaná, located within the Arequipa region, authorities report that landslides have claimed at least 40 victims across several communities. Recovery teams are focusing on shelter, safety, and basic needs as the disaster unfolds in this coastal-to-mountain corridor where heavy rains and unstable terrain have intensified the danger.

Civil Defense officials told CHP radio that roughly 200 manufactured homes were destroyed in Secocha, one of the hardest hit towns. The devastation in Secocha underscores how sudden mudflows and rock falls can sweep through informal settlements, leaving families with little time to react and severely testing local emergency response capacity.

The district government is mobilizing emergency brigades and relief supplies to the affected zones. In total, about 2,000 families have reported losses or significant damage, with many now dependent on temporary shelters and humanitarian aid as rescue and assessment operations continue. Local authorities emphasize rapid needs assessments to identify vulnerable households and coordinate with regional and national agencies for ongoing support.

As the immediate danger settles into a longer-term recovery phase, communities within the affected districts remain vigilant against new landslide threats. Some residents have relocated to higher ground or more stable terrain within the region as a precaution while engineers assess slope stability and drainage conditions to prevent further incidents.

Rohel Sánchez, the regional governor of Arequipa, announced plans to push for an official emergency designation that would cover damage across seven provinces in the region. Such a declaration would unlock additional resources, streamline coordination among agencies, and accelerate reconstruction efforts for homes, public facilities, and critical infrastructure that were damaged or rendered unusable by the landslides.
