In western Japan, residents of Saga and Nagasaki prefectures faced urgent evacuation advisories as a tropical storm tracked toward the region. NHK reported that roughly 37 thousand people in total were urged to seek shelter and move to safer locations while conditions allowed. The warnings signaled a noteworthy weather threat, with authorities indicating the fourth level of a five tier alert system for imminent danger.
Residents were instructed to relocate to secure areas immediately while streets remained passable. Weather data from the first hour of the event showed intense rainfall, with Nagasaki receiving 69 millimeters and nearby Saga recording 59 millimeters. Projections suggested that these areas could see as much as 200 millimeters of precipitation within a single day, a figure that underscored the risk of flooding and related hazards in the region.
Commenting on the storm’s potential impact, a seasoned meteorology scholar, formerly a senior lecturer at the Department of Oceanology within the Faculty of Geography at a major Russian university, drew a stark comparison. The expert noted that the hurricane’s force bore similarities to the devastation seen in Derna, Libya, after the city faced catastrophic flooding, and echoed the scale of destruction associated with large maritime storms. The remark was offered to illustrate the severity of the current weather pattern and its capacity to cause widespread damage in vulnerable coastal communities.
Earlier in the year, large-scale evacuations were also reported in China, where authorities relocated a substantial number of residents in anticipation of typhoon activity.
