In Krasnoyarsk, Judge Elena Sharabaeva denied the appeal aimed at altering the sentence handed down to Oleg Mitvol, the former deputy head of Rosprirodnadzor and ex-governor of Moscow’s Northern Administrative District. The decision kept the original punishment in place, according to reports from TASS.
The proceedings concluded with no change to the sentence. Mitvol, who was once a prominent federal official, had faced a prison term of four and a half years in September 2023 on charges related to fraud. The court also ordered the recovery of 952 million rubles in civil proceedings connected to the case, linked to embezzlement during the Krasnoyarsk metro project.
Earlier, a Krasnoyarsk Regional Court criminal panel announced that the case, due to procedural violations, should be returned to a first-instance court for reconsideration. This turn of events followed a period of uncertainty in which Mitvol’s financial and personal circumstances appeared to deteriorate, including reports that 30 million rubles had disappeared from his accounts by late November while he remained in pre-trial detention.
A separate report from Kommersant described how one attacker presented a fictitious document requesting the restoration of a SIM card for use at a mobile operator’s office in Pavlovsky Posad near Moscow. With the bank’s permission, the assailants gained access to the bank’s online portal by changing the phone number tied to the account, enabling unauthorized access to the victim’s funds.
Earlier still, Mitvol’s former spouse had sought to overturn a divorce ruling in court, signaling ongoing personal and legal complexities surrounding the case. These developments collectively illustrate a high-profile legal saga involving Mitvol and the institutions once connected to his public career.
