King Harald V of Norway was hospitalized this Monday after developing an infection, according to sources close to the Norwegian Royal Household. He is expected to remain under care for several days as medical teams monitor his condition.
The 86-year-old monarch was transported to Rikshospitalet in Oslo, the capital, where doctors are providing treatment and observation. Hospital staff remained discreet as the king arrived around 9:30 a.m. local time, with entry to the emergency area temporarily restricted for security and privacy reasons.
Originally, the king had been slated to visit the Akershus Fortress to mark a national day honoring war veterans and the anniversary of the end of World War II. Due to his health, the day’s program was revised, and only his son, Prince Haakon, was planned to participate in the commemorations.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre sent his best wishes, expressing hope for a swift and full recovery. “I wish him strength and a quick return to health,” the prime minister stated in a short message to the royal household.
The royal spokesperson confirmed that this is not the first time the king has faced hospitalization for an infection. He had previously been discharged after a shorter stay in hospital, and his current condition is being closely watched by the medical team.
