Researchers at University College London have observed that a low-carbohydrate, or keto, eating plan can help people with diabetes manage their blood sugar and shed excess weight. The findings are reported through SpringerLink.

The keto diet concentrates on fats and proteins while markedly reducing carbohydrate intake. British investigators explored whether a regimen originally designed to treat epilepsy could offer advantages for diabetics. The current analysis pools data from multiple studies to evaluate the health benefits and potential downsides of this approach for diabetes management. These results come from a meta-analysis, which uses statistical methods to combine findings across several investigations.

According to the analysis, the keto plan can drive rapid weight loss. The emphasis on foods like meat, eggs, fish, and cottage cheese appears to promote satiety and reduce overall appetite. Since excess weight and obesity can worsen diabetes, adopting this diet may contribute to better overall health for individuals with the condition. Additionally, the analysis indicates that blood sugar levels can stabilize after following a low-carbohydrate plan for roughly 15 to 32 weeks.

Nevertheless, researchers cautioned about potential drawbacks. Elevated protein intake may pose risks for kidney health in some individuals. During protein digestion, the body produces nitrogenous waste such as urea, which the kidneys must filter. Consistently high protein consumption can place added strain on these organs.

It is important to consider contraindications and individual factors when evaluating the keto approach for diabetes management. People with preexisting kidney conditions, or those at risk for kidney disease, should consult healthcare professionals before making significant dietary changes. Ongoing medical guidance helps ensure that any weight-loss or blood-sugar goals align with overall health and kidney function.
