Investigators indicate that a 59 year old local resident had entered the complex the night before and had remained hidden inside one of the buildings. After the mall closed for the day, he emerged from concealment, selected goods from a specific store, and proceeded with the plan to steal items. A security guard confronted the suspected thief in an attempt to detain him. The assailant resisted, fatally escalating the encounter by stabbing the guard in the stomach before fleeing the scene.
