Kalashnikov concern is preparing to adjust the AK-12 assault rifle to align with the shifting needs of the Russian military. This intent was conveyed by the company’s chief, Alan Lushnikov, in a briefing to TASS.
Concerning the AK-12, the 2023 update captured the most substantial feedback and gaps identified by the SVO, and those concerns were addressed. Looking forward, Lushnikov explained that additional changes could be implemented if new issues reach a critical level and customer specialists propose modifications to the weapon’s technical parameters. In such a scenario, the company would authorize these adjustments with the goal of boosting reliability, ergonomics, and performance on the battlefield.
To ensure systemic problems are spotted and corrected, leadership underscored a continuous feedback loop with end users. Company representatives maintain regular engagement with military personnel who rely on these weapons in demanding environments, creating a channel for practical insights that guide ongoing development and field testing.
Earlier statements from Lushnikov highlighted an ongoing project within Kalashnikov that explores artificial intelligence under the codename Legionnaire. The division is working on onboard control for unmanned aerial vehicles, integrating AI capabilities to enhance autonomous operation, situational awareness, and decision support on the field.
Additionally, reference has been made to administrative changes in Russia that facilitated the transfer of confiscated weapons to SVO-controlled territories, a process accompanying broader strategic and logistical adaptations in the sector.
