The 15-year-old who stabbed a classmate in Águilas on Monday was taken to a hospital rather than released straight away. The local court, exercising jurisdiction over juvenile matters, ordered a more restrictive precautionary detention as the young person faces a charge of attempted murder. He will reside at the La Zarza training center, a facility managed by Fundación Diagrama, while the case proceeds.

The court found that the pupil who was attacked did not have a chance to defend themselves after the assault from behind. A restraining order was issued against the assailant, prohibiting any contact or proximity within 200 meters of the victim. The stabbing occurred inside a classroom and the injured student was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Moments after the incident, reports indicated that the teenager responsible for the stabbing was apprehended at home by Security Forces and taken into custody. Investigators then proceeded to the offices of the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office. The case will now be handled in a closed regime setting, with a focus on support geared toward the student’s eventual reintegration into society.

According to prosecutors, the Juvenile Judge regarded the facts as wholly reprehensible, calling for a strong criminal response and punitive measures. The Murcia Superior Court of Justice echoed this position, stating that only the most restrictive measures, such as confinement in a closed regime, are appropriate under the circumstances.

Quick response as brake

The incident is described as a preliminary protection case that remains under investigation in two autonomous communities. The magistrate noted that cooperation and parental oversight are limited, yet the court must consider the adolescent’s personal, family, and social-educational circumstances, along with technical reports. These factors collectively support a rapid action intended to curb the behavior in question, leading to the decision to pursue precautionary detention.

The events unfolded around half past nine on Monday morning when emergency services received multiple calls about a minor in need of urgent medical care due to a stab wound inflicted by another young person. The scene was the Alfonso Escámez Secondary Education Institute, a seaside town location in Águilas. The class period had just begun when the attack occurred.

One student reportedly attacked another from behind and then fled the school grounds. An ambulance arrived to provide medical treatment for the injured student. Fortunately, officials indicate that the blade did not reach critical organs and the victim’s life was not in immediate danger. The student remained conscious after the incident and was transported first to Rafael Mendez Hospital in Lorca, then transferred for surgery at Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia.

IES Alfonso Escámez has described the incident as a single, isolated event. The school’s statement noted that while the stabbing was an isolated incident, the entire education community was shocked. The administration expressed solidarity with the families of students and thanked teachers, health workers, the Local Police, and the Civil Guard for their prompt and decisive actions. They reaffirmed that protocols were activated to support all students and requested understanding and cooperation from families as the school community works to resume normal activities. The school added that with help from ministry experts, any student in need would receive assistance as quickly as possible.
