Italy Hesitates on Supplying Warplanes to Ukraine: Tajani Talks Peace and Defense Strategy

Italy’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, suggested that sending Italian warplanes to Ukraine would be almost impossible to execute. He outlined his view in a wide-ranging interview, emphasizing practical hurdles and the need for careful consideration before any decision is made. He noted that, at present, the topic has not been discussed in Rome, but if a choice were ever taken, coordination with other Western allies would be essential to determine which aircraft models would be suitable for Kyiv, avoiding a patchwork of different jets that could complicate training and maintenance. The minister stressed that without alignment on the aircraft type, maneuvering through pilot readiness and operational interoperability would become an additional challenge for Ukraine and its partners.
