The detainees, a man and a woman who may have formed a close and emotionally connected partnership, are being examined for possible roles in terrorism, including plans to organize or participate in activities that threaten the democratic order and to recruit and train others for similar causes. According to Ros Police Commander Pasquale Angelosanto, one of the suspects is described as a teenage chemical technician who appears to have begun adopting extremist views online and might have aligned with ISIS principles. He noted that the individual is transitioning toward more radical stances, a shift he said could influence a broader risk posture if not intercepted early.
Angelosanto emphasized that the detainee demonstrated the capability to acquire chemical precursors used in very dangerous explosives, a conclusion drawn from the suspect’s employment context and access to specialized materials. He added that this marked a new instance in Italy of a citizen who has become radicalized within the home environment through self-directed learning on the internet, underscoring evolving threat patterns observed by investigators.
The commander also pointed out that the investigation points to a planned trip to Nigeria, where a regional ISIS branch is reported to operate. He described the case as part of an urgent call for extreme loyalty among members and suggested that the travel could be timed to follow a potential attack, highlighting the seriousness with which authorities assess both travel and operational readiness in these situations.
