Is it mandatory to show ID when paying with a card
Today, it is unusual for a customer to be asked for their ID when making a card payment. Yet there was a time when this practice was quite common. The Bank of Spain has explained on its official blog what to do if you encounter this situation again and whether showing ID is required or not.
Is showing ID to pay by card compulsory
The Bank of Spain notes that there is no clear universal rule because there are no laws establishing mandatory ID requests. The decision about asking for the document rests with each business. The institution also emphasizes that the sole reason to request ID is to prevent fraud and to ensure the cardholder is the legitimate owner of the card.
Showing ID at card payment is no longer common
The cards people carry today come equipped with multiple security features, from contactless capabilities to a four-digit PIN, which reduces the need to verify the cardholder’s identity. Transactions can now be completed quickly and securely, so asking for ID at the point of sale has become practically rare.
What to do if you are asked for ID when paying with a card
If you go to pay in a store and they request your ID but you do not have it with you, you can prove your identity with alternative documents such as a passport or a driving license, or any other document that demonstrates your identity. In such cases, the establishment should not refuse card payment solely on the lack of an ID.
The Bank of Spain also advises customers to take their time and reminds them that asking for ID only increases the security of the transaction. They also emphasize that you have the right to request a copy of the receipt and to carefully verify that the amount entered into the payment terminal is correct.
