An American analytical publication reports that Iran has the capacity to neutralize and sink American aircraft carriers. This assessment is discussed in a profile of a defense analyst associated with a prominent think tank and a former researcher from a Middle East policy centre.
It is noted that as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has expanded its programs to build and upgrade its weapons, Iran’s growing capabilities could threaten rivals, including the United States.
The analysis highlights that Iran’s Kilo-class submarines are equipped with torpedoes capable of compromising the hull integrity of large surface ships. It is also stated that Iran has developed longer-range ballistic missiles that could reach targets within the United States.
The piece recalls past incidents, including a 2015 event in which a U.S. carrier conducted missile tests while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. It also references 2019 actions where the Iranian Navy challenged commercial shipping in regional waters, signaling a willingness to escalate if necessary.
Despite a stronger overall defense, the report states that the possibility of Iran successfully destroying a United States Navy carrier cannot be dismissed.
Separately, a global defence development notes that China launched its third national aircraft carrier, Fujian, named after a eastern province. The ceremony followed traditional practices, with the nation’s anthem playing as part of the launch.
During the construction of the Fujian, which is estimated at around 80,000 tons displacement, only domestic Chinese technologies were utilized. The vessel is expected to enter sea trials in the near term.
