A 32-year-old woman of Albanian origin was detained by Civil Guard officers this Monday in connection with the death of her two-year-old son in Bigastro. Sources close to the investigation confirm that the infant died under circumstances that suggest abuse rather than a natural death. The mother has a past history of drug use, and while she initially claimed the child’s injuries were the result of a home accident, autopsy findings indicated cardiac-respiratory arrest with bruising on the neck and injuries compatible with prior mistreatment. The toddler’s twin brother, who had been brought to Alicante General Hospital by court order, also showed signs of previous injuries. Authorities accuse the mother of causing the child’s death and injuring his sibling, while also noting concerns about the family environment that may have affected the other child.
The incident unfolded in a residence located in the urban area of Bigastro on a Saturday night. A 112 emergency call reported a two-year-old child presenting with foaming at the mouth and difficulty breathing. Initially, the mother stated that the child had accidentally struck his head on a table while playing and stopped breathing.
Local Police responders found the boy unconscious at the scene and could not revive him. An emergency SAMU medical team confirmed the child’s death and requested the Civil Guard’s involvement as part of the ongoing investigation.
Municipal sources indicate that the local police notified social services of the City Council in accordance with established protocols, ensuring care for the remaining children in the family—the twin boys and an eight-year-old girl.
The mother was admitted to the psychiatric ward at Vega Baja District Hospital in Orihuela the following day in relation to a suicide attempt. After receiving treatment and subsequent discharge, she was detained by the Civil Guard in light of the results from the CT scans and MRI studies performed on the deceased child. These post-mortem tests revealed multiple internal injuries and a documented history of prior harm, confirming a pattern of abuse. An autopsy conducted at the Forensic Institute in Alicante on the following day reaffirmed that the death was violent in nature.
Authorities indicate that the forceful impact once believed to be the trigger for the mother’s injury may be linked to actions by the detainee, now in custody.
With the child’s death and the mother’s suicide attempt verified, the court ordered a transfer of the twin brother to a hospital for checks on possible internal injuries and any signs of prior harm. There is documentation indicating that the mother had previously sought hospital treatment for injuries affecting one of the twins.
