Investigation underway into alleged sexual assault during Bilbao holiday celebrations

Ertzaintza is conducting a formal inquiry into a sexual assault that allegedly took place around the Bilbao holiday period, prompting regional safety authorities to review events tied to the city’s celebrations.

In a Wednesday radio appearance, Josu Erkoreka, a deputy in the Lehendakari’s office and a member of the Basque Security Council, confirmed that the victim resides outside Bilbao and has already filed a complaint at a police station within the Ertzaintza jurisdiction regarding these incidents.

Officials from the security department declined to provide additional specifics about the attack or any potential date for further action, citing privacy and ongoing investigative considerations.

Erkoreka noted that the medical assessment linked to the case was carried out in a hospital located outside Bilbao, underscoring the mobility involved in the investigation and the procedural steps required for a comprehensive evaluation.

He added that such complaints are inherently complex. The verification of sexual assault involves a multi-layered process that extends beyond a single morning: it requires careful interviews, specialist expertise, and a full medical examination to ensure accuracy and protection for the victim.

Amaia Arregi, a member of the Bilbao Security Council and a representative of the Municipal Police, raised attention during the same interview. He indicated he is not aware of any sexual assault occurring within the party environment, but acknowledged a pattern of inappropriate touching and other acts that did not escalate to a formal complaint. He stressed that the current case is being treated with due seriousness given the surrounding circumstances and the potential impact on public safety during festive periods.

Authorities emphasize that investigations of sexual violence, especially in crowded event settings, demand careful handling to balance transparency with the need to protect victims. The authorities are also mindful of ensuring that inquiries respect the rights of all parties involved while maintaining public trust in the safety measures that accompany large-scale celebrations in Bilbao and the broader Basque region.
