The driver of the quad involved in the tragic incident at Plaza del Pueblo in Alcobendas, which left several pedestrians injured, died this Tuesday at Madrid’s La Paz hospital. Officials confirmed the death after the driver had been in a critical condition since the crash. Local health authorities relayed the update to news agency Europa Press.

The crash occurred on May 31 at approximately 19:30. The quad rider, a 25-year-old man, apparently lost control of the vehicle, which veered into a busy area and traversed a terrace where people were seated. The collision affected a number of pedestrians and residents who were on the scene at the time.

Seven individuals sought medical attention following the accident. Of these, three were discharged on-site, while four were transported to regional hospital centers for further care. The most seriously injured was the quad rider himself, who suffered a severe head injury. After being intubated at the scene following initial first aid, he was transported to La Paz Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries in the days that followed.

Among the other injured, a 75-year-old man and a 36-year-old man were treated for injuries that included a fractured shoulder, a mild head injury, an open fracture of the left leg, and a suspected pelvic fracture. Medical teams reported that both patients were undergoing surgery and were showing signs of stabilization during the early stages of recovery.

Another person, a 48-year-old man, experienced neck pain and was evaluated on scene. He was later transported by Red Cross personnel to Infanta Sofía Hospital where he was admitted. His prognosis was reported as poor, but he was discharged a few hours later after initial assessment and care.

Investigation authorities began their work at once. Local police teams arrived on the scene and began collecting witness statements and possible video evidence. A relative of the 75-year-old victim visited the site the day after the incident to aid in the inquiry by providing additional context and identifying potential witnesses.

There are two leading theories at this stage, both considered coincidences rather than intentional actions. One theory suggests the quad rider may have been traveling at high speed, while the other considers the possibility that the rider attempted to avoid an unforeseen encounter with a scooter. In both scenarios the quad collided with a person who was on the terrace and then struck a sign before careening to the ground.

Witness accounts describe the vehicle continuing its path across the area as bystanders and patrons looked on, some of whom were seated and drinking on the terrace. The quad then struck an empty row and halted its momentum. The investigation remains active, and prosecutors have not yet closed the case according to statements from Alcobendas Local Police.
