A 26-year-old driver was the focus of a Civil Guard investigation into a serious road-safety incident on the A-7 motorway between Elche and Crevillent. The case involved the driver traveling in the wrong direction for a stretch of twelve kilometers, sparking a high-stakes effort to prevent a head-on collision as oncoming traffic approached. A vehicle attempting to avoid this hazardous encounter ended up colliding with the misdirected car, but fortunately there were no injuries among the occupants of the other vehicle.

The event unfolded on February 9. Civil Guard coordinators and emergency responders tracked signals from motorists along the Alicante–Murcia axis of the A-7 after reports of a car moving in reverse direction surfaced on the highway.

From approximately kilometer 518 to kilometer 530, a properly guided vehicle managed to brake and swerve in time, keeping the occupants of the reverse-traveling car from causing a more serious crash. The incident resulted in substantial property damage to the misdirected vehicle, though no injuries were reported in that moment.

The Police Reporting Team and Patrols from the Torrevieja Traffic Detachment were dispatched to the scene on the highway. Their initial priority was to prevent additional incidents by other road users while gathering data and collecting samples to clarify the sequence of events and determine responsibility.

The car involved in the accident, which had traveled against the flow on the A-7, was photographed and its condition documented as part of the on-scene analysis. The situation underscored the immediate dangers of driving in the wrong direction on a major highway.

The Traffic Analysis and Research Group of the Alicante Subsector (GIAT) initiated a formal study to identify the driver responsible for traveling in the opposite direction. The investigative process focused on reconstructing the route and identifying points where the vehicle entered and left the highway, as well as assessing the circumstances that led to the erroneous approach.

Early findings indicated that the driver caused the incident by entering the highway in the wrong direction, then exiting and re-entering the same section. This pattern suggested confusion or impaired judgment at the time of the error, prompting a thorough evaluation of the driver’s actions and state of fitness to drive.

The young driver was summoned to respond at the Benemérita command post after voluntarily presenting at the Novelda Civil Guard post the following day. She explained to officers that the initial decision to head onto the highway in the opposite direction was an attempt to distract herself, and she chose to report the matter promptly given the seriousness of the situation.

As the investigation progresses, the driver faces charges related to road-safety offenses. Penalties can include fines, potential short-term custody depending on jurisdictional provisions, and the revocation of the driver’s license for a period ranging from one to six years. The Civil Guard continued the instructed procedures through the Elche Guardia Court as part of the continuing inquiry.

In this case, authorities emphasized the critical need for all motorists to follow highway regulations strictly and to stay alert at all times. The incident serves as a stark reminder that even a momentary lapse in judgment can lead to dangerous consequences on high-speed roadways, highlighting the ongoing work of traffic safety agencies to identify, analyze, and deter risky driving behaviors.
