Researchers at Guangzhou Medical University observed that individuals with both depression and obesity showed higher inflammatory markers and poorer cognitive performance, notably in working memory and processing speed. The authors suggest that weight reduction could lead to improvements in brain function for those with depressive symptoms. The findings appeared in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

Statistically, major depressive disorder raises the risk of developing obesity by about 58 percent, while obesity increases the likelihood of subsequent depression by around 55 percent. Both conditions are linked to cognitive decline, which may heighten vulnerability to other mental and physical illnesses. This overlap prompted the researchers to investigate how these conditions interact and influence one another.

In the study, data were drawn from 265 volunteers diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Participants were grouped by body weight, completed assessments measuring depression severity and cognitive abilities, and provided blood samples to quantify inflammatory biomarkers.

Analyses revealed that those with both depression and obesity tended to have slower information processing and weaker working memory compared with peers without obesity. The combined condition was also associated with elevated levels of three of nineteen proinflammatory biomarkers: tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 8, and macrophage inflammatory protein 1 beta. The research team posits that inflammation could drive cognitive impairment, suggesting that weight loss may be a critical step toward cognitive recovery.

The study authors noted that the results hold promise for clinical practice. Overweight or obese individuals with depression may adopt weight management and anti-inflammatory strategies to support improvements in cognitive function, particularly in processing speed.
