Inditex is resuming activity in Ukraine after a two year pause caused by the ongoing war, unveiling a gradual reopening plan for both its stores and online channels starting April 1. The company confirmed to Europa Press that the pace of reopens will be adjusted in response to market conditions as they evolve in the months ahead.
In practical terms, the group founded by Amancio Ortega will bring back approximately 20 stores under its seven brands, including three Zara locations, in the Kiev region beginning April 1. The plan also envisions opening stores in Lviv soon after, with communication already shared with the relevant shopping centers and landlords. This marks a significant step in reconnecting with Ukrainian shoppers after a voluntary shutdown that began on February 24, 2022.
Industry sources indicate that, depending on how the security and economic situation develops, Inditex could restore roughly fifty of its eighty stores across Ukraine in the coming months. This projection was reported by the Financial Times and reflects the companys measured approach to expansion in a market still rebuilding from conflict.
Alongside the physical stores, all seven brands within the Inditex group will restart online order fulfillment in Ukraine at the same time as the first stores reopen. Service terms for customers will be announced on the brands individual online platforms when operations resume at scale.
Company spokespeople stressed that the top priority remains the safety of employees and customers. Since February 2022, Inditex has operated a special program to support staff and their families, maintaining employment and salaries while ensuring compatible income sources for those who may have second jobs or other arrangements.
The firm is actively working to ensure consistent retail quality across markets where it operates. Among ongoing initiatives, some stores are being refreshed and a portion of store staff will participate in training programs during the coming month at Inditexs Poland affiliate, reflecting cross-border sharing of expertise amid regional challenges.
Major fashion players, both regional and international, have been operating in Ukraine for months. For example, H&M announced the return of its operations in Ukraine in late 2023, signaling a broader revival of fashion retail in the country as conditions allow.
Back in early 2022, Inditex contributed 3 million euros to support Ukraine’s population, focusing on assistance for refugees through ACNUR. The company also engages in local clothing donations and provides employment opportunities for displaced workers through its Polish affiliate, reinforcing a concrete commitment to the community during and after the crisis.
As the market stabilizes, Inditexs actions are being watched closely by investors, retailers, and consumers in both Canada and the United States.
