Incident details and police response
The alleged assailant, identified as Antonio, was escorted home by Homicide Group officers who arrived to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack. The objective was a visual inspection of the residence, and experts from the Scientific Police team also attended to assist in the investigation.
Neighbors reported that the couple had been experiencing difficulties in their relationship. They had separated and led separate lives, yet continued to share the same dwelling. The flat, purchased roughly fifteen years ago, had shown no obvious changes to nearby residents, and there had been no prior incidents or heated arguments that stood out. It appears the man did not cope well with the decision made by his wife to end the relationship.
The emergency services were alerted by the suspected perpetrator himself. The incident is described as an attempted homicide linked to gender-based violence and occurred around three o’clock in the morning. The man notified 112, reporting that his wife and he had sustained serious injuries, though he did not initially acknowledge his role in causing the injuries.
Local police units from Palm were the first to respond, followed by the National Police who joined the scene shortly after. When investigators entered the residence on the building’s second floor, they found the woman in her room with a bloodied face and body after sustaining multiple blows to the head. The husband appeared highly agitated and spoke in inconsistencies, which led officers to immediately classify the incident as gender violence.
It was noted that the woman had been struck on the head with a hammer. Before the arrival of the officers, the man attempted to wipe away blood from the tool that was later seized as evidence. Despite the severity of the head injuries, the woman remained conscious and told officers that she had been attacked while she was asleep.
She was promptly transported to Son Espases hospital, where doctors confirmed the seriousness of the skull injuries caused by the blunt instrument and also identified a fracture in her hand. Although her condition remains serious, medical staff indicated she was not currently in immediate danger. Officers planned to visit the hospital later in the day to obtain a statement, contingent on the victim’s health conditions at the time.
The man, who wore a white protective suit to avoid contaminating the crime scene, remained at his home for about an hour before being taken to the Police Headquarters after authorities completed the necessary checks. He initially claimed memory gaps, but after further questioning he admitted to striking his wife with the hammer, explaining that the couple’s family situation had grown more complicated in recent months and that he had expressed a desire to leave the relationship.
The suspect is slated to appear in court the following day to address the charges and the ongoing investigation.
