Residents and traders in the Teis neighborhood describe 83-year-old Ángel Martínez from Redonda as “identifiable, rude and very macho,” after he was accused of stabbing his wife to death in the Tenerife town of Los Cristianos on a Wednesday. In contrast, their alleged partner, 82-year-old Clotilde Rodriguez, is remembered by many as a woman with a kind and generous nature, with neighbors saying, “She was such a good woman.”
The couple shared the same address on Calle Sanjurjo Badía, though they had spent many winters in the Canary Islands, a practice that allowed them to be near one of their two daughters who lived there for health reasons.
Friends and acquaintances who spoke with FARO DE VIGO, a media outlet within the same publishing group, recounted a life marked by frequent conflicts tied to Ángel’s temperament. Descriptions portray him as someone who often appeared shirtless, wearing flashy jewelry such as gold rings and bold chains, and who boasted about his time in Tenerife. About five years ago, neighbors say Ángel began traveling alone to the island while Clotilde remained in Vigo, and the couple had planned to reconnect again this year.
Local observers who know the couple from the Berbés market recall that they operated a fish stall there, making them known figures in the neighborhood economy and social circles.
Arrested after being discharged from hospital
Following the alleged crime, Ángel Martínez inflicted self-harm and was taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. He remained in police custody there, and after discharge, he was formally arrested according to information provided by government sources.
The Interior Ministry confirmed this morning that authorities are investigating the incident as a gender-based crime, noting that Clotilde’s death marks the fourteenth case of this type recorded in Spain so far this year. Authorities have indicated that the investigation continues to determine the precise sequence of events and the motive behind the tragedy.
