In a case unfolding in Valencia, the court has heard statements tied to a group sexual assault that occurred on July 9, 2020, in an urban area of El Puig. Four teenagers faced charges for the incident, with two of them under the legal age and two adults involved. The 3rd Section of the Valencian County Court is handling the prosecution of two adults, identified as PLT and JSL, while two of the minors had already received verdicts in prior proceedings.

Reports indicate that two minors aged over 18 at the time were prosecuted and sentenced to a total of five years in prison for a youth center group sexual assault. The sentence was divided into two parts: de facto detention for two years and a three-year probation period. Because the two minors did not begin any part of the two-year detention, the total penalty remained five years. For minors to benefit from this arrangement, they must not have committed another crime during the period and must comply with the suspension decision imposed on the minor victim. Presently, the 3rd Chamber of the Valencian County Court is pursuing charges against the minors as well, with the public prosecutor seeking a conviction of 22 years in prison for each defendant. The charges include sexual abuse of minors under the age of 16 and incitement related to the offense.

“I don’t know if I raped a girl”

During the trial, which began with witness testimonies, several friends and acquaintances of both the victim and the alleged aggressors took the stand, along with one of the detained minors who provided testimony. The mother of the victim also spoke to the court about the impact of the incident.

One striking moment came from a young man known to the attackers. He described speaking with one of the minors on the rooftop of a building on the same night of the events. The witness recalled that the accused said, with uncertainty, that he did not know whether he had raped the girl. The witness explained that later, during questions from the prosecutor and defense lawyers, the group learned that the young man had dined with friends that evening and later joined the convicted minors at a table around 2:00 a.m.

According to the testimony, the perpetrator admitted being with three other defendants on the night in question, all part of the same group. He described the victim as very intoxicated, having consumed alcohol, and indicated that the group helped her up and took her to a fountain to recover. The account suggested a pattern of coercion and supervision by the adults present.

On the terrace of the apartments

The recollection continued as the minor explained that he and the victim had moved up to the terrace of one of the buildings, with others who had been involved observing. On the dark rooftop, the adults allegedly provoked the situation, and the minor claimed to have had sexual relations with the victim while she was intoxicated. Witnesses described continued pressure from the group, with remarks aimed at encouraging further acts. Statements suggested that a younger co-defendant was urged to engage with the victim using phrases that implied coercion. The minor later acknowledged that the encounter had taken place under circumstances where the victim was not fully able to consent.

After hearing the account, the witness said, the minor faced a moment of realization about the conduct. He questioned whether the act constituted rape given the victim’s intoxication. The witness added that the group then dispersed earlier than planned after the revelation and a sense of shock spread among them.

The suicide attempts

The victim’s mother testified about the lasting trauma experienced by her daughter after the events. She described heightened sensitivity to touch and recalled that the night of the assault left the victim with persistent anxiety. The family noted repeated nightmares and ongoing distress that continued for years. Psychologists and psychiatrists provided input, with one professional describing ongoing treatment for the young woman at two specialized centers. The testimony highlighted how the victim has struggled with daily life, including bouts of anxiety when leaving the home.

The hearing resumed with the testimony of several experts, and the session was adjourned to later in the month to allow the court to hear the victim’s statement captured on security-camera footage. The evidence would be presented in a manner designed to minimize further re-victimization of the survivor. [Cited from court proceedings, Valencian County Court]
