Huawei’s commitment to empowering women in STEM

Huawei is actively seeking new talent, with a focus on women who bring extraordinary potential to science, tech, engineering and mathematics. This emphasis comes against a backdrop of long-standing gender roles, stereotypes, and a shortage of female role models in STEM. In Spain, only about one in four students in STEM fields are women. The gender gap in STEAM education is a global concern, and UNESCO notes that fewer than a third of researchers worldwide are women. This context highlights a major challenge: to spark participation, sustained interest, and progression for female talent in STEM because excellence in technology has no gender. Diversity fuels innovation and creativity across all knowledge domains. Including women’s perspectives strengthens teams, broadens the range of solutions, and leads to more comprehensive outcomes.

The path toward gender equality in STEM can be demanding, but Huawei remains dedicated to advancing it. The company strives to create an environment that empowers and celebrates women’s talents. Through a series of initiatives, Huawei aims to attract and elevate female talent, breaking stereotypes and showing that women have a strong voice in scientific and technological issues.

future leaders

Among its programs is the Female Leadership School in the Digital Age, now in its fourth edition. This program gathers top female talents to mentor young women and help shape the technological revolution. The latest edition, held in Valencia in July, brought together 29 students from diverse fields, ranging from engineering and biotechnology to humanities and social sciences, all united by a shared goal: to influence a Europe moving toward a digital, inclusive, and sustainable future. Since its inception, the program has benefited more than 100 young women from 34 European countries, empowering them to take the next step. Some alumni have risen to leadership roles in technology, business, global politics, and education.

key allies

The effort is not limited to Huawei. The company collaborates with educational institutions and organizations to build a robust network of support and opportunity for women pursuing STEM careers. A partnership with a University-Business Foundation enabled the December premiere of a program called The Future of ICT Scholarship, which provided assistance to 50 female students to enhance their STEM skills.

Related news highlights the involvement of inspirational organizations. The Inspirational Girls Foundation works to boost girls’ confidence and ambition and improve their job prospects. Huawei’s collaboration with this foundation enabled workshops such as Robotic Girls’ Club Tech IG, an interactive program where girls learn to build and program a robot. The Club Tech IG initiative brings technology closer to girls through hands-on learning. More recently, the BCN Inclusive Coding program, run with the Mobile World Congress, aims to improve digital skills among vulnerable groups, with a special focus on young women and immigrants.

Huawei’s broader mission extends to inspiring future generations and affirming that women hold a vital place in technology. The sector is poised for a bright future as digital skills reshape the job market. OECD projections indicate that a large share of current jobs will be replaced by STEM-based roles by 2030, underscoring the value of cultivating female talent in this field.
