In Honduras, authorities have announced a series of intensified security operations targeting the Caribbean portion of Cortes, an area linked to a recent wave of deadly violence. The announcement came from the president, who conveyed the plan via a message on social media, outlining a broad crackdown that would unfold across the Cortes region in the coming days.

The president explained that the measures would include a large number of operations, frequent raids, arrests, and widespread checkpoints designed to disrupt criminal networks operating in this area. The objective is to restore public safety and deter further attacks as the investigation progresses.

According to the president, a special curfew has been imposed in Choloma from 9 PM to 4 AM, with another curfew planned for San Pedro Sula starting on July 4. The curfews are set to last for 15 days, with a potential extension should security conditions require it. Officials stressed that these restrictions are temporary and intended to reduce nighttime crime while authorities pursue suspects.

The violence in the Sula Valley has already claimed many lives, including vulnerable groups such as children and women. In recent gun assaults, at least 21 people were killed, and 11 more were injured in a shooting at a pool hall. The president attributed the violence to mercenaries who are reportedly in the service of drug trafficking organizations and who have been terrorizing communities in the region.

Authorities appealed to the public to assist in crime investigations and to identify those responsible for the attacks. The government signaled its readiness to reward individuals who provide information that leads to arrests or the prevention of further crimes, underscoring the importance of community cooperation in breaking the cycle of violence.

Earlier reports indicated that a significant number of inmates, at least 41, were held at the Cefas Center for Women’s Social Cohesion in Francisco Morazán. A clash involving members of the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gangs resulted in fatalities, highlighting the ongoing security challenges that the country faces and the need for coordinated law enforcement responses across districts and border areas.
