The collision happened at approximately 17:47 local time (11:47 Moscow time). The Ministry of Transport reported details of the incident. A Japanese Coast Guard Bombardier DHC8-300 was taxiing along the runway, en route to deliver humanitarian aid to quake-affected areas.

While moving, the Bombardier was struck by an Airbus A350 approaching from Sapporo. Both aircraft caught fire after the impact, creating a chaotic scene on the tarmac.

One witness described a sudden bump during the approach and observed bright sparks and a smoke-filled cabin as the aircrafts collided. This testimony came from a passenger aboard the Kyodo-reported aircraft.

Tragically, five of the six Coast Guard personnel aboard the Bombardier were killed. The ages ranged from 27 to 56. Only the pilot escaped the burning aircraft, and authorities reported the pilot was in serious condition receiving medical care.

Ihe Airbus A350 carried 379 people on board, including eight children. Most passengers escaped the burning cabin using emergency inflatable slides. The Tokyo Fire Department reported at least 17 injuries among those involved in the incident.

More than a hundred firefighting units responded to contain the damage, and medical teams were dispatched to the scene to provide urgent care.

Investigation ongoing

The cause of the crash remained under investigation by the Japanese authorities. Officials said it was not yet clear whether air traffic control decisions at the airport contributed to the collision.

The incident forced Haneda Airport to suspend operations on all four runways, disrupting air travel during a peak travel period when many people return home for the New Year holidays. Kyodo reported that three of the other runways were later reopened around 21:30 local time (15:30 GMT).

Nearly 18 incoming flights to Haneda were diverted to Narita, the capital’s secondary airport, to manage the sudden disruption.

Valuable lives of employees

Officials expressed condolences and pledged a thorough investigation. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida directed ministers to prioritize the inquiry and to keep the public informed as details emerge.

Deputy Commander Yoshio Seguchi of the Coast Guard expressed sorrow for the losses and extended condolences to the families and friends of the victims at a press briefing, reiterating the mission and the human cost of the tragedy.
