A forest fire affected the municipality of Guardamar del Segura in the early afternoon, burning through woodland, terraces, and weed-covered fields adjacent to tourist accommodations, between urban centers such as Moncayo and along National 332 south of the town center. The blaze began near a cemetery and moved uphill, prompting a swift response from regional authorities.
The Mayor, José Luis Sáez, stated that officials received information indicating there was no need to evacuate residential areas, despite the challenging conditions on the ground. He emphasized that residents were spared displacement, and there is no evidence that any homes were directly impacted by the flames. Road closures were not required, even though the fire came perilously close to the highway shoulder.
The incident drew a substantial deployment from the Provincial Firefighters Consortium, Generalitat Forest Firefighters, and aerial support. At least two air tractors, a helicopter with a sidecar, and another aircraft for inspection joined forces with Local Police and Civil Guard units in an effort to halt the spread of the fire and protect nearby properties.
The weather did little to ease the situation. A westerly wind and record-breaking temperatures—peaking around 40 degrees Celsius—hampered firefighting efforts and intensified the urgency among residents and responders alike. The heat marked the first 40-degree day of the season in numerous coastal areas, signaling a vulnerable period for fires along the region.
Many residents were on vacation and joined the firefighting effort by supplying fresh water and assisting when possible, including helping to maneuver hoses uphill through the affected terrain. The collaborative response reflected the community’s readiness to step in during emergencies and support the official teams on the ground.
Thick smoke from the blaze was visible for kilometers, with observers from nearby towns such as Torrevieja, Almoradí, and Santa Pola able to see the plume rising over the landscape. Local authorities continued monitoring the situation throughout the afternoon to prevent escalation and to protect critical assets in the tourism-driven area.
