Oscar watchers are weighing in as the Golden Globes return to television with a splash of intrigue. This year’s ceremony will look different from last year’s NBC telecast, reshaped by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s refresh and the heightened scrutiny that followed. Here are the films, TV series, actors, and directors that not only earned nominations but are also positioned to win at the 80th edition of the Globes.
In December, HFPA revealed the lineup of contenders across film and television. Among the most talked-about titles is Inisherin’s Banshees, directed by Martin McDonagh, which leads with eight nominations for the 80th Globes. After a year that brought star-powered attention, the film Suddenly Everywhere drew six nominations, cementing its place as a standout from the creative teams of Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, as well as Damien Chazelle’s Babylon and Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, each garnering strong support and repeated mentions as frontrunners.
Among the best dramatic films, Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár, and Top Gun: Maverick are among the top contenders. For the best musical or comedy film, the field includes Babylon, The Banshees in Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Knives Out: The Mystery of the Glass Onion, and The Triangle of Sadness. Streaming platforms dominate the nominations, with HBO Max and Netflix tied for the most, followed by Hulu.
