Global Film Slate Preview: Mission Danger, Elemental, and More

New delivery uncertainty marks an action packed mission as Tom Cruise proves that age is just a number. The Spanish premiere opens this Wednesday, two days before other performances.

On Friday, most weekly premieres will be broadcast. Pixar steps forward with Elemental, its latest animated feature, and a short film will accompany it as a bonus.

“Mission Danger: The Death Penalty – Part One”

This marks the seventh entry in the high intensity action and espionage saga led by Tom Cruise, who revived the famous franchise from the sixties on the big screen. Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct this first half of a two part story, with the finale due in June 2024.

Joining Cruise are Simon Pegg as Benji, Ving Rhames as Luther, and Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa. Ethan Hunt and the IMF team pursue a terrifying weapon that could endanger humanity. The pursuit carries them through cities like Rome and Venice, and the White Widow, played by Vanessa Kirby, makes a notable return.

“Elemental”

Governing Peter Sohn guides Pixar’s latest venture. The film delivers an immersive experience and showcases a bold technological leap. Although box office results have varied, it has still drawn attention alongside earlier hits like Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2.

Elemental unfolds in a city inhabited by beings forged from natural elements water, air, fire, and earth. It centers on Candela, a fiery young woman and second generation immigrant, and a water child named Nilo. The story explores family bonds and the cultural gap that can appear between generations.

The feature film is released with the short Carl’s Date, featuring Carl Fredricksen and his dog Dug, familiar faces from Up. This time the film follows a man who agrees to go out with a friend.

“Waiting for Dali”

David Pujol presents his debut feature a tale of life, love, and sustenance. Iván Massagué, Clara Ponsot, Nicolas Cazalè, Pol López, and Paco Tous lead the cast, with the film premiering at the Malaga Festival’s official section.

The narrative begins in 1974 Barcelona at the end of the Franco regime, where two chef brothers emerge as heroes. One devoted to the hearth while the other balances restaurant duties with demonstrations against the regime.

“Among the Fig Trees”

A Tunisian director uses a non professional ensemble to depict daily life and the dreams of young fig pickers in northern Tunisia. This director, known for documentary work, enters fictional cinema with a project that premiered at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and earned Best Film at Namur and the Audience Award at the African Film Festival.

“The Return of the Swallows”

Winner of the 2022 Seminci Golden Virgo, Li Ruijun directs this Chinese drama facing censorship debates. It centers on love and respect, beginning with an arranged marriage between two people who have been pushed out by their families: a barren wife and an aging farmer who cannot carry on alone.

“The Braibanti Case”

Veteran Italian filmmaker Gianni Amelio traces the life of Aldo Braibanti, a prominent writer and poet of the 1960s who faced political persecution. The project blends documentary insight with fictional storytelling to recount a controversial period in Italy’s cultural history.

Starring Luigi Lo Cascio and Leonardo Maltese, the film portrays a romance between a teacher and a student in a era marked by realism and social tension.

“Nothing”

Based on Janne Teller’s Danish novel, Nothing follows a group of teens who confront the world beyond childhood safety. A provocative thriller about meaning and choice that unsettles assumptions and questions what is worth fighting for.

The cast includes rising talents such as Vivelill S. Holm, Harald K. Hermann, and Peter Gantzler, as the circle around Pierre Anthon dissolves when a stark claim about life’s purpose is made.

Also on the slate: “South Wind” and “Innocent Man”

Director Alvaro García-Capelo presents South Wind along the Cantabrian coast, a drama exploring loneliness after a prison term for corruption ends.

Innocent Man, a psychological thriller by Ivan Gergolet, tells the story of a widowed nurse who cares for a coma patient who may be connected to her husband’s death from asbestos-related illness.
