A massive Burmese python, a species native to Southeast Asia and often called the giant black tiger python, was recently captured in Florida. The creature weighed about 90 kilograms and stretched roughly 5 meters in length, according to reports from Live Science.

Originally misidentified by some as an alligator due to its impressive size, this specimen ranks as the second heaviest Burmese python ever recorded in Florida. The record for the species in the state stands at 98 kilograms, set in 2022.

The latest sighting occurred in the vicinity of the Big Cypress National Preserve, where the snake was seen slithering along a roadway. Five men restrained the reptile to prevent it from moving, and a professional python hunter, Amy Seavey, eventually euthanized the animal. An autopsy revealed deer hooves in the python’s stomach, a grim reminder of the potential impact on local wildlife.

Native to Southeast Asia, Burmese pythons have become a notable presence in Florida, though the exact pathway of their arrival remains unclear. In the 1970s these snakes were popular as pets, and many were released or escaped into the wild over time. With few natural predators in Florida to limit their numbers, Burmese pythons have reproduced aggressively, disrupting native ecosystems and threatening several species through predation and competition.

Public hunting of Burmese pythons is allowed under humane guidelines, and the state has seen extensive efforts to control their population. More than 10,000 pythons have been captured in recent years, reflecting ongoing management programs. In 2023 a five-meter-long female python was captured, and researchers found 60 eggs within the body, indicating the potential for future reproduction that season.

Biologists and conservationists continue to monitor the situation and study methods to reduce the python population while protecting native wildlife. The persistence of these snakes in Florida highlights the challenges associated with non-native invasive species and the importance of responsible pet ownership and ecological safeguards.
