In Georgia, relatives of a patient filed a lawsuit against a hospital after part of the man’s skull was left behind during care, and he faced a hefty bill for a prosthetic. This development was reported by CNN.
Fernando Cluster arrived at Emory University Hospital following a stroke. To save his life, surgeons performed a craniotomy and temporarily removed a section of skull. The removed bone, measuring about 12 by 15 centimeters, was sent to a storage facility for safekeeping until replacement could occur.
Once his condition stabilized, doctors attempted to reattach the skull fragment, but it could not be located. The patient waited for the prosthetic to be installed, and the hospital presented a bill totaling $146,800.
Complications arose when an infection developed during the prosthesis installation, necessitating another surgical procedure in which the patient had to undergo further treatment. The patient’s relatives subsequently filed a lawsuit seeking accountability for the medical process and the resulting expenses.
In another report, a separate case from Turkey described a private dental clinic patient who experienced a severe complication. During a dental implant procedure, the patient felt sharp pain and lost consciousness after the dentist reportedly tightened the implant excessively. The resulting complication caused the prosthesis to pierce the jawbone and lodge in the brain, leading to serious health consequences. [Attribution: CNN]
Earlier, in Krasnodar, there were reports of a woman sustaining eye injury following dental surgery. These incidents underscore the potential risks associated with surgical implants and the critical importance of proper technique and post-procedure monitoring. [Attribution: regional health coverage]
