Four people sustained serious injuries in a knife attack at a gym in Duisburg, located in western Germany, according to police sources shared on social media.
Officials indicated that at least one assailant used grenades and a sharp instrument, such as a knife or machete, while attacking several gym-goers. The incident appears to involve multiple injuries and a violent outbreak at the facility.
The injured were transported to a hospital in the Rhineland city. Police described the victims’ condition as critical and said responders were closely monitoring their status as the investigation continued.
The emergency call came in around 17:40 local time (15:40 GMT), prompting immediate police and emergency services to rush to the scene. The gym is situated in Duisburg’s downtown area, very near the town hall, where officers set up a substantial presence to control the area.
According to a tabloid newspaper, the incident occurred in the gym locker room. It remained unclear how many people actively participated in the assault or how the violence unfolded as witnesses were questioned.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker or attackers targeted visitors without discrimination before fleeing the scene. Police later confirmed they were actively searching for a suspect in the vicinity while gathering details from those who were present at the facility.
North Rhine-Westphalia police in Duisburg urged the public to stay clear of the area while a large police operation continued. Authorities emphasized the need for cooperation from witnesses and urged anyone with information to come forward to assist the inquiry.
