A 55-year-old tourist, of foreign origin, died following an accidental fall near the Mola lighthouse on Formentera this Wednesday, according to SAMU 061. The tragedy unfolded as the visitor was accompanied by a spouse and friends when the incident occurred on the rocky coastline.
Initial reports indicate the individual slipped from a height of about 120 meters, with witnesses describing a sudden and alarming fall that prompted immediate emergency response. The timing placed the event at mid-afternoon, shortly before 1:15 p.m., when the regional emergency center received a call reporting a person had fallen near the lighthouse area.
Paramedics in an Advanced Life Support unit arrived promptly on the scene, supported by local police, the Civil Guard, security personnel, and firefighters. The response aimed to secure the area, assess the condition of the casualty, and initiate appropriate life-saving measures under challenging terrain and conditions.
Because the victim could not be located from the accessible vantage points, a coordinated search operation employed aerial and water assets. A drone was deployed to survey the rocky expanse, while a jet ski unit assisted in combing the shoreline and shallow waters in the vicinity.
The Civil Guard aircraft ultimately located the deceased individual among the rocks, enabling a careful recovery operation. The scene was stabilized and the body was prepared for transport, with the helicopter lifting the casualty away from the coastline after a critical assessment on site.
Following the incident, psychologists were dispatched to support the family members and witnesses present at the location, ensuring immediate emotional and psychological care during a traumatic event.
The Civil Guard helicopter carried out the extraction and, by 5:00 p.m., had removed the body from the maritime rock area. Firefighters assisted in the final stages of recovery, coordinating with medical and logistical teams to transport the remains to the Formentera helipad and subsequently to the local funeral facility for onward arrangements.
