The Forest Fire Incident in Burgos and the Subsequent Arrest for Negligence
A Civil Guard operation led to the arrest of a 47-year-old man on suspicion of serious negligence after a forest fire spread in the Sabinares de Arlanza area of Burgos. The blaze began on a Sunday afternoon while harvesting work was underway outside permitted hours, and it quickly escalated into a significant emergency that affected a wide landscape and local communities.
According to a Civil Guard statement issued this week, the fire originated in the afternoon on a Sunday and has since consumed more than 3,000 hectares of mountains, woodland, and grain fields in the Burgos region. The fire also caused damage to multiple homes across nearby neighborhoods as it burned through several zones.
As a precaution, around 900 residents were evacuated from the municipalities of Santibáñez del Val, Santo Domingo de Silos, Villanueva de Carazo, Carazo, and Hacinas to ensure their safety while emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.
The Burgos Command’s Nature Conservation Service has taken charge of the investigation and is examining potential sources and causes of the fire. A technical inspection of the area, combined with interviews conducted with residents, has supported an initial assessment of the event.
Initial findings indicate that the fire started after midday at a grain farm where agricultural work was taking place. Ongoing inquiries have shown that there appears to be gross negligence by the detainee, as harvest-related activities were prohibited during the designated hours. Local authorities had mandated a pause between noon and the early evening due to a high fire risk period, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
