In Yakutia, twelve forest fires covering an area of about 60 thousand hectares were brought under control within a day, and five fires were fully extinguished. This update comes from Interfax, citing the Yakut regional branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry.
Fifteen hundred forty-nine people and one hundred twenty-one units of specialized equipment participated in the firefighting effort. Despite these successes, the total area affected by active fires across the republic exceeded 430 thousand hectares, with the number of active sites standing at 64. Concurrently, smoke reached fifty settlements across the region.
A federal state of emergency has been in force in Yakutia since July 1, 2024, due to ongoing fires.
As of August 7, about sixty-nine active forest fires remained in Yakutia.
The most challenging situations were concentrated in the Olekminsky, Verkhnevilyuysky, Verkhoyansky, Vilyuysky, Suntarsky, and Mirny districts, where the combined fire footprint surpassed 547 thousand hectares. Firefighters from the Russian Emergencies Ministry continued intensive efforts to suppress blazes near villages such as Kyryky, Kudu, Cheka-Byas, Orget, Saydy, and Chapaevo.
