About 170 children and teenagers were evacuated from a summer facility in the municipality of Vallgorguina, near Barcelona, after a fire broke out and the building’s roof collapsed as the flames spread. The incident prompted a rapid response as crews worked to secure the area and ensure the safety of everyone on site.
Officials from the Generalitat Fire Department reported that the fire had been brought under control and nine fire engines were engaged in extinguishing efforts in the vicinity. The scene remained active as responders continued to spray water and monitor hotspots to prevent a rekindling.
Firefighters had already cleared and evacuated the children and adolescents by the time ground crews reached the facility, according to the same authorities. The evacuees were relocated to a safe area nearby as a precaution while teams assessed the structural stability of the building.
Relatives of the minors were called to pick them up once it was deemed safe, as continued use of the site for the colonies would be impossible. Authorities explained that safety protocols required the relocation of the children to other accommodations.
The dwelling affected comprised a ground floor and an upper level. The fire began on the lower level and quickly spread upward, reaching the roof and causing it to collapse. Fire crews worked through the night to fully extinguish the blaze and prevent any further spread to nearby structures.
In addition to fire crews, two ambulances from the local Medical Emergency System (SEM) were dispatched. None of the residents required medical treatment on-site, and there were no reported injuries at the time of this report. Emergency personnel remained on scene to assess any potential medical needs among evacuees and to coordinate relocation efforts if required.
The situation persisted as responders coordinated with local authorities to manage traffic and secure the perimeter around the damaged property. Updates indicated that the priority was to safeguard all children and staff associated with the facility while investigators examined the cause of the ignition and the sequence of events that led to the collapse.
The fire response highlights the importance of rapid evacuation plans for youth facilities and the ongoing role of regional emergency services in ensuring secure transitions for displaced residents. The authorities noted that all actions were taken with the safety of minors as the foremost concern and that lessons learned would inform future preparedness measures for similar sites.
