Authorities reported that a 42-year-old Hispanic man was taken into custody on Wednesday by the National Police after investigators with the Homicide Group linked him to a fatal arson incident. The arrest follows a case in which a fire caused extensive damage to a residence and endangered several people on the night of March 24 in the Palma district of Son Oliva.
The incident began early in the morning when flames ignited on the first floor of a farm located on Calle Jacinto Guerrero. The property, which is owned by a bank, housed a couple and their two young children, aged two and eight. Residents were awakened by smoke as the blaze rapidly spread through the entryway, preventing escape by door alone. Neighbors acted quickly, placing a ladder to help the family members reach safety from an upper level. The woman later described the moment as a calculated act aimed at harming them, noting that a cruel individual set fire to their home.
As the fire intensified, the entire building was evacuated and access to the upper floors was blocked. Four occupants of the dwelling and nearby neighbors sustained injuries from burns and smoke inhalation, requiring medical attention. Emergency services responded promptly, working to control the flames and assist anyone in need while securing the area for investigators.
Following the blaze, the National Police Homicide Squad launched a comprehensive inquiry. Through a series of interviews, scene examinations, and collaboration with forensic teams, investigators identified a suspect believed to be responsible for starting the fire. The mounting evidence led to yesterday’s arrest, as authorities continue to pursue charges related to arson and the serious risk it posed to residents. The case remains under active investigation as authorities gather additional information and assess potential connections to similar incidents in the region.
The broader community remains urged to cooperate with law enforcement as inquiries proceed. Officials emphasized the importance of prompt reporting and reminded residents to prioritize safety, noting that arson cases not only threaten lives but also jeopardize neighboring homes and streets. The investigation continues to unfold as authorities seek to establish a clear account of the events and the motive behind the incident.
