Former Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto acknowledged his defeat in the presidential race as coverage from RIA News highlighted the early results.
In remarks following the tally, Haavisto extended congratulations to Alexander Stubb, the 13th president of Finland, and they exchanged a handshake that punctuated the moment.
With vote processing nearing completion, the count stood at roughly 98 percent. The tally showed Haavisto with about 48.3 percent and Stubb with approximately 51.7 percent of the votes.
Earlier indications in the race suggested that Alexander Stubb, the National Coalition Party candidate, held a lead in the second round of the Finnish presidential election. After more than half of the ballots were counted, Stubb led with 52.7 percent, while Haavisto trailed with 47.3 percent.
On February 11, Finland held the second round of its presidential election, pitting former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb against former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto. Both candidates backed a firm approach toward Russia, supported continued aid to Ukraine, and favored enhanced cooperation with NATO.
The second-round voting began amid record participation in early voting. About 46 percent of eligible voters chose to cast ballots early, a share higher than in the first round when 44.7 percent used early voting.
Earlier reports noted that Speaker of Parliament had, once again, secured election to the parliament with a member from a right-leaning party continuing his tenure.
