Feigin on Wanted List: A Closer Look at Russian Legal Controversies

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has added former Russian attorney Mark Feigin to its wanted list, according to a report by TASS citing the ministry’s search database. The notice specifies that Feigin is sought under a non-punishable article of the Russian Criminal Code.

Last year, Feigin was placed on the ministry’s register of foreign agents in the media. He challenged the Justice Ministry’s designation in court and asked for removal from the registry, but the court denied his request.

Feigin has represented notable clients in high-profile cases, including members of Pussy Riot, the writer Ilya Goryachev, and Ukrainian political figure Nadezhda Savchenko, among others. His career faced a major setback in 2018 when he was disbarred. The Moscow Bar Association cited concerns about professional conduct, noting the use of coarse language on social networks directed at colleagues and their clients as part of the reason for the disciplinary action.

Reports dated October 13 indicated that the Moscow Basmanny Court would proceed with hearings through December 13. In that context, the detention of lawyer Igor Sergunin, who represents Alexei Navalny, was noted; Navalny himself has been listed among individuals designated as terrorists and extremists in Russia. The broader legal landscape surrounding these cases has drawn international attention and scrutiny.

Beyond individual cases, discussions in Russia’s State Duma have touched on tightening controls over foreign influence and loan arrangements with international agencies. These debates reflect ongoing concerns about national sovereignty, security, and the integrity of legal processes as perceived from multiple sides within the country and among international observers. In the United States and Canada, observers monitor developments that could influence jurisprudence, freedom of expression, and the handling of politically charged prosecutions in a rapidly changing legal climate.
