A 51-year-old man died this Sunday morning after the car he was traveling in, in the backseat, collided with an ambulance on Villarroel street in the Eixample district of Barcelona. The exact reasons behind the collision were not disclosed as the investigation unfolds.
According to the Barcelona City Council, the impact involved six people in total: four occupants of the touring vehicle and two emergency health technicians who were en route to a service. The emergency responders were part of the medical team, while the other passengers were members of the vehicle’s cabin party. The incident is being treated as a serious traffic collision with multiple injuries still under review by authorities.
The man who died did not survive his injuries and succumbed on arrival at the health center. Three other individuals and two less severely injured emergency medical technicians were transported to different hospitals for treatment and observation, the council reported. Rescue teams and city services coordinated a rapid response to the scene in the early hours following the event.
The alert came in around 02:47, and first responders reached the location promptly to provide care and begin the on-site assessment. The Guàrdia Urbana was dispatched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, while the Sistema d’Alemrències Mèdiques coordinated care for the wounded and ensured safety at the site. The ongoing inquiry aims to determine how the collision occurred and whether any external factors or traffic conditions contributed to the tragedy.
With this latest fatality, the city reports a total of 22 traffic-related deaths for the year so far. The year’s toll includes 14 motorcyclists, five pedestrians, and one vehicle driver who lost their lives on city streets. These statistics underscore ongoing concerns about road safety and the consequences of accidents in urban centers like Barcelona, prompting continued attention from local authorities and the public alike.
