The mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, announced on his Telegram channel that explosions occurred in the Ukrainian capital on the night of Sunday, May 28.
Reports from the city indicate that an air defense system was active in the Kyiv region as events unfolded.
Kyiv’s local media noted that explosions also affected other parts of Ukraine, with particular mention of the Zhytomyr and Sumy regions.
In the early hours of May 28, an air alert covered multiple regions including Chernihiv, Sumy, Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Rivne, and Khmelnytskyi as well as the Kherson region, all areas under Ukrainian government control at the time.
On October 10, the Russian Armed Forces began a series of missile strikes against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. President Vladimir Putin described these actions as a response to what he characterized as terrorist acts by the Kyiv regime, specifically citing an attack on the Crimean Bridge.
At present, a broader Russian military operation is described by authorities as under way in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin announced the launch of the action on February 24, 2022, stating its aim was to demilitarize Ukraine and to change its government structure.
The decision to initiate this operation has contributed to new sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies, who have framed the move as a strategic reaction in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
