Set within the authors’ acclaimed young adult literary subgenre, this cinema work sits at the intersection of cerebral science fiction and the darker moods of traditional Grimm tales. It imagines a future world that is both primitive and hyper-advanced — a techno-feudal society born from humankind’s genetic engineering excesses and the cascading ecological and economic collapses that follow. At its core stands a resolute young girl who fights to keep her ailing father alive while navigating a post-apocalyptic landscape. Her journey becomes a catalyst, reshaping the visual language and the very texture of the film as it moves beyond conventional titles and archetypes. The narrative nods to iconic dystopias such as Stalker, Children of Men, The Highway, The Hunger Games, Elysium, and Annihilation, yet it forges a path that feels both nostalgically familiar and strikingly new.
In a deliberate detour from traditional plot-driven storytelling, Buožytė and Samper prioritize mood, atmosphere, and the inner landscapes of their characters. Their imaginative universe blurs boundaries between plant and animal, and between organic life and synthetic forms, infusing the world with touches of Cronenbergian body horror. The setting is not friendly by default; every encounter carries the threat of violence, while occasional acts of warmth and glimmers of hope offer a counterbalance and spark curiosity about what might come next.
