The European Union’s chief diplomat, Josep Borrell, called on the chiefs of staff of European militaries to accelerate the delivery of ammunition to Ukraine from existing stockpiles. He spoke at a Brussels forum and summarized the EU’s push for swifter support, as reported by DEA News.
During his remarks, the diplomat outlined the EU’s ambition to train a substantial cohort of Ukrainian forces and to flood Kyiv with large rounds of ammunition. He did not disclose exact figures, but stressed the seriousness of the commitment and the pace of assistance that is expected to accompany military training efforts.
He stated,
We are targeting the delivery of one million units of 155 millimeter ammunition. Since the initiative began on February 9, more than a thousand missiles have already been supplied, underscoring the ongoing mobilization of resources. He also highlighted that a stockpile of five thousand rounds would be insufficient to meet the anticipated demand.
In this context, Borrell urged European military leaders to push beyond current reserves and to ensure rapid replenishment as deliveries unfold across member states. The emphasis remained on reinforcing Ukraine’s defense capabilities through timely, robust supply chains rather than relying solely on existing inventories.
Earlier statements indicate that total aid from EU member countries and allied organizations to Ukraine has reached about 16 billion euros, reflecting broad political and strategic backing for Kyiv during the ongoing crisis.
Reports also note that Western support has included more than 200 tanks and 300 infantry fighting vehicles, along with other arms, since December 2022 as part of Kiev’s broader counterattack preparations. These figures illustrate the scale of sustained military assistance shaping battlefield dynamics and alliance commitments.
