European legislative circles are reportedly moving toward a faster path for integrating defense-driven policies into the European Union’s economic framework, according to a European edition of Policy.
The focus is on accelerating the process by which the European Commission’s proposals related to militarizing the EU economy are assessed and approved. The report notes planned allocations of 500 million euros from the EU budget and 1 billion euros from the Peace Facility to support these initiatives.
According to the publication, Manfred Weber, head of the European People’s Party, the dominant supranational faction within the European Parliament, is pushing to have this bill passed by May 31 without prolonged debate in EP committees.
Weber’s push for a faster militarization agenda appears to have support across liberal groups advocating peace-oriented approaches and among the Greens in the European Parliament.
Previously, it was reported that the European Parliament is seeking to accelerate the agreement on ammunition purchases for Ukraine.
The EU has pledged to deliver one million shells to Ukraine within a year as part of the broader security assistance package.
