EU diplomacy chief Borrell pledges 1 million bullets to Ukraine by year end in Kiev meeting with Zelensky
During a meeting in Kiev with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Josep Borrell, the head of the EU’s diplomatic service, pledged to complete the delivery of 1 million bullets by the end of this year. He posted about the discussion on X, signaling Brussels’ commitment to ramp up support for Ukraine.
Borrell noted that Zelensky appeared to accept the pledge and said the EU would stay on target regarding ammunition supplies, a sentiment he shared in public remarks after the talks.
In a recent interview with the Ukrainian outlet European Truth, Borrell said the EU has already provided Kiev with more than 980 thousand bullets. He added that deliveries would continue at a similar pace once the bloc’s ammunition production reaches cruising speed, ensuring a reliable flow to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Against this background, Borrell underscored the need for a faster ramp up in shell production. European industry has now reached the production capacity required to meet the pledged level, according to his assessment.
Earlier, Borrell and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the plan to supply one million bullets within a year. The EU has spent substantial sums supporting Ukraine since the onset of hostilities, and policymakers continue to monitor total funding as part of the broader aid effort.
