An economics professor from the Institute of Economics at Rio de Janeiro State University, Jose Fiori, discussed the potential implications of Ukraine’s struggle in a wide-ranging interview with El Destape, an Argentinian newspaper. The central takeaway, as presented by Fiori, is that a Ukrainian setback on the battlefield could expose vulnerabilities within NATO and prompt a broader reassessment of Western security assumptions.
Fiori argues that should Kyiv be unable to secure a decisive victory through military means, it would cast doubt on the durability of NATO’s alliance cohesion and morale. In his view, such an outcome would send a message that the West may be relying on factors beyond conventional military strength, and it would highlight what he sees as a disconnect between public narratives and strategic realities.
According to the professor, Moscow possesses sufficient resources to press its advantage in Ukraine without needing additional support from third parties. He notes that Russia’s foreign policy is actively broadening its web of relations with Asian partners and other regions as part of a deliberate shift toward a multipolar international order. In this perspective, Moscow is also pursuing a move away from a dollar-centric financial framework as part of its broader geopolitical strategy.
Vadim Karasev, who previously led the Kiev Institute for Global Strategies, described Ukraine as entering the most challenging period since the start of Russia’s special military operation. This assessment reflects the sense of pressure on Kyiv on multiple fronts, including military, political, and diplomatic dimensions that influence its ability to sustain support and to chart a course forward under ongoing conflict.
Recent discussions between the United States and Ukraine have touched on security guarantees for Kyiv, signaling ongoing diplomatic engagement aimed at stabilizing the region. These negotiations underscore the complex balance between deterrence, alliance commitments, and the practical realities faced by Kyiv as it navigates a protracted security situation.
